Heinz to use Coca-Cola's plant bottle for ketchup

H.J. Heinz Co. says it is making its iconic ketchup bottles a bit more green.

The food maker announced Wednesday that it will use Coca-Cola Co.'s plant-based plastic bottle technology for its ketchup.

Coca-Cola said it is the first partnership of its kind and they hope to push the use of its plant-based material into other parts of the food industry.

The world's largest soft-drink maker introduced the new bottle material in 2009. It's made with a mixture of traditional plastics and up to 30 percent plant-based material.

Coca-Cola hopes to eventually stop using traditional plastic, for which oil is a major ingredient.

Heinz said it will roll out the new bottle to the U.S. in June with 120 million bottles and plans to expand it globally.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the licensing agreement.

Heinz said the new material will increase its packaging costs at first but it does not plan to pass along those costs with higher prices.

Heinz and Coca-Cola said it could be the first of several agreements between the two companies, which they declined to detail but said could include work on distribution, purchasing, supply chain and health issues.

A Minute With: Jason Sudeikis getting a "Hall Pass"

Jason Sudeikis is best known for making audiences laugh on the TV sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" with his overzealous, track suit wearing dancer and his impersonation of U.S. vice president Joe Biden, among many characters.

This Friday, the 35-year-old stars in new film comedy "Hall Pass," playing one of two married men, Fred and Rick (played by Owen Wilson) whose wives grant them a week off from marriage to do whatever they want. However, the men quickly discover the single life is not exactly how they envisioned it. Sudeikis sat down with Reuters to talk about the movie and his career.

Q: Fred and Rick love their wives, but relish having this 'hall pass.' What's your take on marriage and relationships?

A: "I believe in marriage, having been married (to '30 Rock' writer/producer Kay Cannon). We were together nine years, married for four and then separated in 2008. The divorce was finalized during the shooting of this movie."

Q: How did that affect your work on the film?

A: "Understanding the power and commitment and the peaks and valleys of marriage absolutely informed the choices I made with my character. Especially emotionally toward the end where he potentially loses his wife. But Fred's story is completely different from my personal situation. There's more differences than similarities."

Q: "Do you feel a bit of an expert given that your personal life and the movie's themes sort of converged?

A: "I have to accept the fact I'll never know it all. But I wouldn't be where I am today without that relationship. Each experience I go through -- marriage, my public life, my personal life -- I'm learning as I go."

Q: You've had supporting roles in films like "The Bounty Hunter" and "Going the Distance." But "Hall Pass" is your first lead role. How does it feel?

A: "I understand the potential of it. And when Owen signed on, I was like, 'That guy knows what he's doing. He'll make me look good! (laughs)."

Q: You and Owen spend practically the entire movie together. What was your first encounter like?

A: "I remember our first phone call. I was staying at a hotel (in Los Angeles) and getting ready to leave for dinner when Owen called me on the hotel phone. I said, 'Give me your cell phone number and I'll call you right back from the car.' He goes, 'Why don't you give my your cell phone number and I'll call you right back?' I go, 'Ooh, mysterious, I love it!' And he started laughing. That's when I knew we'd be good."

Q: And you get your own solo promotional poster with "Hall Pass." How great is that?

A: "It's neat to have my friends and family be so excited about seeing my poster up in Times Square. But I sort of went through that a couple of summers ago because a lot of my friends thought I was in 'The Hangover' poster, but it was Ed Helms (laughs). My friends made that movie a lot of money because they all thought they were coming out to support me!"

Q: You had to juggle "Hall Pass" and "SNL" simultaneously, and you just wrapped the movie "Horrible Bosses" with Jason Bateman. How do you carve out a film career while on TV.

A: "It's a matter of using your summers effectively. Our 'school year' as we call it on the show, is basically September to May and then we look for summer jobs. Instead of life guarding or mowing lawns, we try to do movies."

Q: How much longer will you be on the show?

A: I signed on for seven years. I'm in my sixth now. I've had the fortunate opportunity to do sketch comedy for 15 years. You can only have so many ideas. I'd like to extend my career a little bit into different genres. I'd love to do a drama."

Q: What are you favorite "SNL" characters?

A: "I love those ESPN guys that Will Forte and I did last year. It's fun watching them because I never get to see what Will is doing next to me when we perform them. Will and I also do (the characters) Jon Bovi who sing opposite lyrics to Bon Jovi songs. That's a movie idea we should explore. Or a television series. We'll see."

Shutdown: Does GOP have the edge this time?

Times have changed.is no Bill Clinton,is no Newt Gingrich. The new guys ran on slashing spending and they’re showing they meant it. Meanwhile, Washington Democrats wouldn’t cut a penny in their spending proposal, even though austerity is the buzzword in state capitals and county seats around the country.

It all adds up to this: Republicans have less to fear from a government shutdown now than they did when they endured the blame 15 years ago — at least that’s the thinking in some GOP circles.

“The context is dramatically different,” said former Rep.(R-N.Y.), who was one of Gingrich’s top lieutenants. “We didn’t run on an agenda of the kind of fiscal reform that the Republicans talked about last November. I don’t think anybody is surprised or taken aback by the fiscal agenda that congressional Republicans have pursued.”

In many ways, the political and policy context is different this time around — the anti-spending sentiment among voters is very real, concern over the deficit has entered the bloodstream of the American public and the economy is in worse shape than it was in 1995. And judging from the union wars in the Midwest, there’s not much love for the public sector in America’s heartland.

Paxon also says Obama is making a mistake if he thinks he’ll climb in the ring and clock Boehner the way Clinton knocked out the chest-thumping Gingrich.

“I don’t think that the public is going to react the way he assumes they will,” he said. “His assumption is that he can just waltz through this, not offer anything substantive and people are going to direct their ire at Republicans.”

Of course, the fear of that scenario is one of the reasons the official party line is that Republicans aren’t even contemplating a shutdown. But that line contrasts with the ultimatum Boehner gave Senate Majority Leaderlast week: Cut spending or watch the government close up shop. “Read my lips,” Boehner said. “We will cut spending.”

Reid and Sen.(D-N.Y.) are mirroring Boehner, having insisted that a short-term spending bill keep the government funded at not a dime less than the current level. Theirs, too, is an ultimatum: Sign off on the status quo or risk being blamed for a shutdown.

“Now is the time for House Republican leaders to stand up to the far right of their caucus,” Schumer said Tuesday. “No one wins in the government shutdown, but, for some mind-boggling reason, some on their side seem to be rooting for one.”

What boggles Schumer’s mind doesn’t seem so complicated for some of the recently elected Republicans.

“March 4, they’ll run out of money, and we’ll see what happens in the meantime,” freshman Rep.(R-Kan.) said Tuesday, according to the Dodge Globe.

“I’m going to be honest with you. If my Republican leadership asks me to vote for a budget, even a two-week budget, that doesn’t have spending cuts, I will say no and I will shut down government,” freshman Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) told constituents, the Palatine Patch reported.

But GOP leaders believe Democrats will stand down from their position. When Reid announced Tuesday that he would introduce a monthlong spending bill with no cuts, he called it an olive branch. Republicans think it’s a fig leaf.

“It’s obvious that we have the more reasonable position,” said a GOP leadership aide. “The Senate Democrats’ position that there isn’t one wasted dollar in the federal budget is absurd.”

Boehner’s demand is simple, it’s easy to message and it lacks Gingrich’s trademark bombast: The bill must at least nick a little bureaucratic flesh. Considering that the House just passed a seven-month spending measure that would hack $61 billion from the federal budget, Boehner’s negotiating position is modest. 

Meanwhile, in the face of painful budget-cutting at state and local levels, Democratic leaders say the government should keep on keeping on at the same rate while the two sides work out their longer-term differences. Even if everyone loses from a shutdown, they say, Republicans will lose more.

“I don’t think it would be a boost for Democrats, but I think it would be a disaster for Republicans,” said Rep. Rob Andrews (D-N.J.). “Nobody wins a government shutdown, no one looks good. But I do think the public would pretty quickly figure out that the reason we have a shutdown is the Republicans’ unwillingness to be reasonable.”

Right now, the two sides are locked in the first round of what could be an epic match. Even if one side folds now, Boehner, Reid and Obama are sure to be back at the bargaining table — or the brink — again soon.

Some in the GOP seem to be hankering for this fight.

Former Arkansas Gov. , for example, said Tuesday that a shutdown “could happen. And maybe it has to.”

Rep. Renee Ellmers, a freshman Republican from North Carolina, suggested Democrats are forcing a shutdown if they don’t simply send the House-passed spending bill to the president.

“The ball is now in the Senate’s court, and ultimately in the president’s,” she said in a Tuesday statement. “Democrats are now threatening a government shutdown rather than cutting spending 2.6 percent.”

The stakes are high enough, and the outcome uncertain enough, that Republican leaders would much rather force Democrats to capitulate before March 4 than risk the potential backlash of a shutdown.

One reason Republicans believe they’re in a better position now than in 1995 — whether before the government runs out of money or after — is the change in leadership.

Gingrich was controversial and confrontational, spoiling publicly for a fight with the more charismatic Clinton. House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky are low-key, and Republicans say they are better at strategy and tactics than Gingrich was.

All along, the message has been similar to what House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Tuesday: “Let me be clear, a government shutdown is not an acceptable outcome … We should be able to come together and find areas to cut spending and save money to keep the government functioning and take the first steps toward getting our fiscal house in order.”

Republicans say it’s Democrats who can’t stop saying the “S” word and that it will cost them politically.

“Sen. Schumer, in particular, is visibly salivating for this to happen,” the GOP aide said.

Some Democrats believe the politics of a shutdown are just what the party needs to portray itself as the party of reason and moderation. They look to the model of Clinton and Gingrich and see a similar dynamic — a tea party-driven House Republican conference driving Boehner to shut down the federal government.

As former Rep. Robert Walker (R-Pa.), a top ally of then Speaker Newt Gingrich, notes in an upcoming op-ed for the Ripon Society, Republicans “lost the public relations battle with the White House” during 1995. Democrats could exploit potential Republican divisions between veterans wary of a repeat of 1995 and the 87-member class of activists who want to go much further than their leaders in pushing spending cuts.

“I’m surprised with the breathtaking speed in which the extremes of the Republican Party took over their caucus,” Israel added. “Moderate Republicans are ashen faced at this. Those few that are left.”

Indeed, 10 days before the government runs out of money, Democrats have already settled on their message: Republicans are radical, reckless and not ready for prime time

But Paxon said Democrats are putting themselves in a precarious place if they expect the current budget battle to play out like the fight between Clinton and Gingrich.

“The public’s in a different place, and the Republicans in Congress are in a different place,” he said.
